The Mercenaries of Uldoon Trail

Janelle Nighthill
The First Lady of the Greenfields

For Torrgon:

“Hero of Greenest, you awaken. I am Janelle Nighthill First Lady of the Greenfields encompassing the cities of Greenest, Berdusk, and Iriabor. I owe you a great debt. You see, the Governor and I were visiting Huntington the Reeve of Greenest when the attack occurred. The Reeve and I were in the market. Sadly, he was taken prisoner and not released as I was and I fear for the worse. I have you to thank for my life. The Governor will not forget that.

I am here to invite you to our home. The Governor’s Estate is located in Berdusk. Once you are fully healed, we would invite you to our mansion for a celebration and to honor you with a title." She bends down to kiss you. I watched your battle. You showed bravery I have never seen." She sighs.

The Warlock of Belial
The Dream

The dream is confusing and refreshing, but you feel something change. The dream becomes brighter and brighter. Lathander is gone. The images of Oghma, Waukeen, Lurue, Gond and Lliira, Torrgon Drake-Slayer, Ned Hammerhand, Ryan, Belinda and Theon are consumed by the rising sun. It is an angry red orb that emanates a harsh light and intense heat. The heat is incredibly dry and you block your face with your hands. The burning continues until you feel blinded and can no longer tell if you are standing in the light or in darkness.

Clap. Clap. Clap. You hear slow applause. “My, what a vibrant imagination you have. So many details. So many flaws.” The discordant voice echoes in the darkness. “I look forward to the second act.” The tone of voice is arrogant and grating yet it has an almost hypnotic quality to it.

From all sides you hear a fluttering like 100,000 bats flying in every direction. Materializing out of the darkness like a molten entity is a figure you recognize as Sir Kessler. From all around, the sounds of bats appear to be his cloak drawing back from the world like a curtain at the great theatres in Waterdeep. Sir Kessler rises ahead of you dressed in red and black with piercing grey eyes that make his face look haunting. You stand now on hot ground. Your boots actually catch fire, but you are paralysed. Within seconds, your clothes burn off your body. You stand before Sir Kessler without disguise. A few seconds pass, you try once more to move but chains coming out of the ground and descending from infinity hold you in place. Arms stretched above your head. Feet held in place to the ground. The world a barren wasteland of magma, rock, and obsidian is seen in all directions. The sky looks no different from the ground. Is Sir Kessler on the ground or speaking from the sky. You can’t tell and it makes you nauseous.

“The real you. Lathander Thorne. Pray tell why you were spying on me?” The voice hisses.

Your mind flashes back to the whore house. The Ranseur. A wave of magma crashes against the rocks near your position that highlights a semi-circle of ranseurs behind Sir Kessler where you see the impaled heads of your fellow MUTs. The images of that night in Iriabor flash in your mind and simultaneously right in front of you. You watch the events of the entire night except all those prostitutes where different in this flashback; they were not women at all. Dark-winged fiends working dark magic on unsuspecting patrons. The elites of Iriabor deceived and exploited. Sir Kessler was not there to waste money on whores. He was building a force, summoning devils, and forging alliances for war.

“Yes, know the truth. I am Kessler the Warlock of Belial. You have crossed me and my Master. You were sent to spy on me. Who sent you? Why?”

The chains pull tighter. You see there is a horrible and terrifying man— a devil— covered in chains. He pulls the chains. He is the chains. Your arms feel like they could be ripped off.

This is no longer your dream.

He feels the panic welling up in his chest. A feeling he hasn’t known in years. “Belial?” If he dies now he won’t be missed. His life means nothing to anyone, barely anything to himself. “Belial? You worship a demon? The horrors that live in the shadows. You worship the darkness not the light? You are as damned as I but at least…” He wants to scream but only whimpers… He knows this is the end… “at least I know I’m nothing!” And he spits at Kessler.

“You are most correct. You are a rat. Vermin. Nothing. Lord Belial shall punish you for your recalcitrance.” The voice is metal and burns with wrath. “But you are no threat, vapid and terrestrial. Let it be known that Kessler the Warlock of Belial always dominates those that cross him.”

You hear a thunderous rumble and the rock beneath your feet gives way crashing down in an explosion. You are suspended by hot iron chains hundreds of feet above a river of magma. You smell your own burnt flesh. A Span of rock leads up to you. The chain devil is there sniffing you as are two other devils covered in horrible barbs. Kessler stands on another span above you his cloak draping over the span like gigantic demonic wings. The sky itself seems alive with fire and behind Kessler you see a tower of pure obsidian that rises hundreds of feet into the air that dominates your sight.

“Rat, you have made a powerful enemy tonight. You seen my plans. War is coming to the world of men and Belial will rule over all.”

“Zartous. Miragrog, Viltanar. Go to Greenest. Find him. Finds his friends. Find his family. Find who hired him. Slay them all!”

You watch the devils charge and disappear under the horizon. The world spins again.

The chains wrapping around your arms explode into tiny shards of glass ripping through your naked flesh in a thousand different places. You begin to fall into the crevice it feels like you are falling forever, but the magma is approaching. You see the magma taking shape; Kessler is watching you fall towards him. The magma becomes hotter. It burns. You feel yourself being incinerated. You become…nothing.

Curtis Talbott
Intelligence Gathered

Talbott looks blankly not quite comprehending what Valkur is saying, but then his eyes once again go wide with the realization of what’s at stake. He speaks faster; a bead of sweat drips down his brow.

“Severin Silrajin has immense wealth and power. Still, the Dragon Queen requires a huge horde gold and other itemsto unlock the spells that bind her, but I do not understand anything about that. The Cult of the Dragon has been growing. People are turning to Tiamat. Peasants and sell swords yes. Kobolds and other beasts too. Yes, there are some horrors among us, but dragons too! It is truly a great sight.”

Aye you are perceptive in your sarcasm; noble birth. Noble lineage for the Cult of the Dragon. Born outside Luskan. I have been part of the Cult since birth. I have been sent South. I work with Mondath and Cyanwrath. They lead the Southern forces. I report to Rezmir the half-dragon Wyrmspeaker of the Black. The army here is 200 strong. Reinforcements are outside Berdusk. Another 400 there. We have fortifications in the Reaching Woods and an army outside Scornubel. Its over a thousand strong. All hiding around the Reaching Woods.

There are five heads of the Cult. One for each of the dragon types. Severin Silrajin is the Red Wyrmspeaker and head of the Cult of the Dragon. I do not know where he is. Rezmir is the Black Wyrmspeaker. I last spoke to her outside Berdusk, but she is close. She moves with a large force. We are consolidating the gold…I do not know more. Mondath holds that information."

Talbott pauses and looks at his hand. He flexes it; he doesn’t want to have it cut off. "She said there was a group that cut a hole into our force from the east side of town. She wanted to trap the mill to lure them in. I was sent to spring the trap. Previously, we hoped to divert some of the MUTs out of town to one of the outposts. It would appear that failed. Stupid kobolds showed up late… Mondath is in town leading the forces directly.

“The Cult of the Dragon ordered the attack. Our power has increased 100 fold these past years. We have evolved and our ambitions have grown. Your town shall fear the Cult. Your town shall soon know of the coming of a new age. Your Town will soon know of Tiamat. Her reign will be unending. The Cult will bring her back into this world. To do so, we require gold and artifacts. We hunt these now. The goal is not just the castle but the wealth of this poorly defended community. The Mercenaries of Uldoon Trail are not match for the Cult. We have amassed substantial amounts of gold tonight I am certain and the blood that accompanies it pleases Tiamat.

The dragon you speak of is named Lennithon though I am certain its really name is far superior. How magnificent! You lowly mercenaries experienced something so legendary. Know and fear the power of the Cult of the Dragon! The Dragon has no interest in you people. You are nothing to him. He is meeting the head of our Cell and passing through. He has enjoyed feasting on your townsfolk. We have the eggs of another dragon in our possession too. Have you ever seen the hatchlings before? Such terror!

Our armies are massive. We operate in cells. Tonight we have attacked all over the sword coast to foster in the Reign of Tiamat! We have great armies. We can infiltrate even further. We are everywhere.

Prisoners at the Mill

Catured kobold stated: “No kill! No kill! He da bosses! I tell you everything. Come here. Take gold. Lots of gold back to base. Take, take, take. Be riches for dragons. Big boss dragons. I do as told. No kill! Please no kill me. I not take much gold. No killed that weak human boy or the old man. I told you go. Kill bad humans who killed brother. You killed brother. I go. I fight. You killed friend with fork! You eat kobolds!! I eat humans!! No no no! I no do that. No do that. I good. No kill. You kill. You kill. I see you. Saw you! Kill with fork, why you do that? Magic like dragons. They come kill you yet you see. Kill you yet. I no kill. But you die you see.”

Intel from the kobolds:

The kobold spills his story with one look of the appendage. “We big group. Lots more than us here. Big bosses. Big big boss Lennithon. He big—Lord Lennithon. Rezmir there too. Rezmir in charge. No hurt I tells what I know. You no kill me!” The craven beast pleads for his life sobbing pathetically. “I no know place. I follow orders. Big boss says go. I go. We attack human house. Make trap. We kill you. More people come. We kill them too. Orders are that. Village wanted we takes it. Need gold for big bosses. Green is gold they says. So much of it. We wants it. All I know. All I know. I swears it. I swears!” The kobold clasps his hands together begging for mercy."

The other two kobolds push themselves away leaving the one isolated and alone. They say nothing.

“We come North. Where big bosses be. Go this way. Others go other way. We come with Zatzil but he go lost. We attacks. Big bosses go to Greenest. Greenish? Theys attacks. I no not more! I not say anythin. I go?”

Main Characters:

The Uldoon Trail
Return to Greenest

The sun is setting as you begin your dinner at Outpost G2. There are two outposts between Greenest and Iriabor called G2 and I2. Each outpost is two days from its respective municipality as per the initial. It’s a stupid name but someone obviously thought it sounded smart. The Outpost themselves are simple walled fortifications with an inn located in the middle as well as a large stable. There is a watch tower at the top of the inn. The protective walls are barely six feet high. Patrols between Greenest and Irabor maintain a constant guard. Farmers and merchants pay to spend the night and for the protection the mercenaries provide.

The past few days have been easy and you are all looking forward to heading back to Greenest for some time off. The boom times have been good for you. The pay is reasonable; you will be paid100 gold pieces once you get to Greenest. The Inns are nice and these jaunts out to the Outposts are quiet and straightforward. The food out here isn’t half bad either and you’re allowed two drinks per night (at your own expense).

Aside from your squad, two outpost guards, a couple of farmers, and the proprietor the Outpost is empty, which is a little unusual. Normally you would expect to see several other merchants and famers at the outposts.

From your squad, Belinda begins telling dirty jokes to the proprietor Geoffrey. Her jokes make him blush and she is rewarded with a free ale. Theon works with you and has proven competent, but he seems very slow to trust anyone and keeps to himself. Can you actually trust him?

As for the rest of the squad. You are all pretty new and this is the first time you have worked together.

Welcome to your campaign!
A blog for your campaign

Wondering how to get started? Here are a few tips:

1. Invite your players

Invite them with either their email address or their Obsidian Portal username.

2. Edit your home page

Make a few changes to the home page and give people an idea of what your campaign is about. That will let people know you’re serious and not just playing with the system.

3. Choose a theme

If you want to set a specific mood for your campaign, we have several backgrounds to choose from. Accentuate it by creating a top banner image.

4. Create some NPCs

Characters form the core of every campaign, so take a few minutes to list out the major NPCs in your campaign.

A quick tip: The “+” icon in the top right of every section is how to add a new item, whether it’s a new character or adventure log post, or anything else.

5. Write your first Adventure Log post

The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light “story so far” post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night’s adventures.

One final tip: Don’t stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you’re using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn’t always up to date or your characters don’t all have portrait pictures.

That’s it! The rest is up to your and your players.
